How Asset Allocation, Location, and Dedication Work Together

Investing isn't just about chasing returns. It's about building a plan you can stick with, especially when life is changing or markets are uncertain. At Step By Step Financial, we use a three-part strategy to help create stability, security, and confidence, no matter what the headlines say.

This approach coordinates three key areas: asset allocation, asset location, and Cash Flow Matching.

    1. Asset Allocation: Building the Right Foundation

Asset allocation is how we divide your investments among stocks, bonds, and cash. The right mix depends on your age, financial goals, timeline, and risk comfort.

If you're close to retirement, we may lean more conservatively with more bonds and cash to support income and reduce volatility. If retirement is still 15–20 years away, we may focus more on growth through a higher stock allocation.

To do this, we use low-cost index funds and ETFs, not because we're trying to beat the market, but because they offer broad market exposure at a low cost. This keeps costs low and spreads risk broadly.

    2. Asset Location: Tax Efficiency Over Time

Asset location is about placing the right investments in the right types of accounts to reduce taxes over your lifetime, not just this year.

For example: Income-producing assets like bonds may be better held in tax-deferred accounts like traditional IRAs. Growth-oriented assets like ETFs may belong in taxable accounts, where long-term capital gains rates apply.

We also use strategies like Roth conversions during lower-income years, tax-loss harvesting in volatile markets, and strategic withdrawal planning. These tax decisions can add up over time.

    3. Cash Flow Matching: Matching Investments to Life

Cash Flow Matching organizes your portfolio based on when you'll need the money. Rather than treating your account as one big lump sum, we divide it into three buckets:

    • • Bucket 1: Cash for the next year, available and liquid
    • • Bucket 2: Bonds and fixed income for years 2–10, focused on income and stability
    • • Bucket 3: Growth investments like stocks and ETFs for 10+ years, designed for long-term growth

This approach can reduce the chance you'll need to sell investments at the wrong time. If markets dip, your near-term spending isn't at risk because it's not tied up in volatile investments.

    Bringing It All Together

This strategy works best when all three elements are coordinated:

    • • Asset allocation builds your investment mix based on your timeline
    • • Asset location places each investment in the account where it's taxed most efficiently
    • • Cash Flow Matching keeps your financial goals on track

Together, this creates a plan that is intentional, tax-aware, and tailored to your real-life needs.

    Final Thoughts

A solid investment strategy should offer more than just potential returns, it should offer clarity and peace. When your investments are designed with purpose, you can focus less on headlines and more on the life you're building.

If you're ready for a coordinated plan designed around your timeline and priorities, we'd be honored to help, one step at a time.
